The Beat Sheet Workshop

The Beat Sheet Workshop With Blake Snyder
Screenwriter and Best-Selling Author Returns for 2-Day Screen writing Workshop

Vancouver, BC: Entertainment industry specialty bookstore, Biz Books welcomes Blake Snyder, "one of Hollywood's most successful spec screenwriters", and author of the best-selling screenwriting series SAVE THE CAT! for a 2-day screenwriting workshop: The Beat Sheet Workshop. It will take place in the BC Producers' Branch Office of the Canadian Film & Television Production Association, #600 - 736 Granville Street on Saturday, May 31st, 2008 from 10am - 6pm and Sunday, June 1st, 2008 from 10am - 6pm.
The Beat Sheet Workshop is a fun and fast-paced 2-day workshop designed to develop an ironclad logline and the 15 beats that will become the backbone of one's script. Class is limited to only 12 participants, allowing for individual attention and effective in-class feedback.
Having taken one of the very first STC! Beat Sheet Workshops, I was able to rework a script of mine which later sold to Tom Shadyac and Universal. The workshop is quite simply the best out there for any level of writer, and Blake’s guidance and enthusiasm is unparalleled. If you liked the book... you'll absolutely love the workshop!
- Ben Frahm, Screenwriter, Dr. Sensitive
His book, SAVE THE CAT! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Every Need was published in May, 2005 and is now in its eleventh printing. It has prompted "standing room only" appearances by Blake in New York, London, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Vancouver, Toronto, and Barcelona - along with numerous sold-out workshops in Los Angeles, where he was also a STAR Speaker at Screenwriting Expo 5 and Screenwriting Expo 6.

Apparently it is not quite the last book on screenwriting you'll ever need, as the eagerly awaited sequel, SAVE THE CAT! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, was published in October, 2007 and is proving to be as popular as his first book.

Blake's method has become the "secret weapon" of many development executives, managers, and producers for its precise, easy, and honest appraisal of what it takes to write and develop stories that resonate. SAVE THE CAT! The Last Story Structure Software You'll Ever Need has codified this method in an easy to use CD-ROM.

In his 20-year career as a screenwriter and producer, Blake Snyder has sold dozens of scripts, some of which were million-dollar sales. He has taught at Chapman, UCLA, Vanderbilt, and Rockport College. His book is the basis of screenwriting classes at USC, Cornell, Buffalo State, The New School, and many major universities in the U.S. and Canada. He has a B.A. in English from Georgetown University and lives in Beverly Hills, California.

The Beat Sheet Workshop is $495 plus GST. To register, please contact Biz Books at 604.669.6431, e-mail at info@bizbooks.net or register online at www.bizbooks.net.

Blake's books and software are available for sale in store at Biz Books or through the online store at www.bizbooks.net.

Whistler Film Festival Announces Call for Submissions
Over $42,000 in cash prizes and commissions available to filmmakers
------------------------------------------------
Whistler, BC (April 14, 2008) - The Whistler Film Festival is seeking submissions for its eighth annual edition, which runs from December 4 to 7, 2008. Canadian and International filmmakers are invited to submit by the following deadlines: July 4 for early film submissions (discount on application); July 18 for short films; and August 15 for feature films.
"Every year the quality of submissions we receive increases exponentially," says Bill Evans, Whistler Film Festival Director of Programming. "We are looking forward to presenting the work of some very talented filmmakers in our competitions, especially in the Borsos Competition for Best New Canadian Film."

Filmmakers are invited to submit films of all lengths and genres including drama, documentary, mountain culture and animated films. The Whistler Film Festival is a competitive festival with five distinct awards: the $15,000 Borsos Award for Best New Canadian Feature, the Audience Award for Best Feature, the $5,000 Best Documentary Award, the $1,000 Best Short Film Award, and the $500 Best Mountain Culture Film Award. Applicants must choose only one category in which to compete.

The $15,000 Borsos Award for Best New Canadian Feature Film presented by the Director's Guild of Canada, British Columbia District Council (DGC BC) is the largest cash prize for a Canadian film in Western Canada. The award is named for legendary Canadian filmmaker Phillip Borsos, best known for his film The Grey Fox, and recognizes films, which embody the spirit of independent filmmaking in Canada. Borsos Award competition entries must be Canadian dramatic features receiving their B.C. premiere at the Festival. Priority will be given to entries receiving their Canadian or World premieres at the Festival. The Borsos Award competition filmmakers will also receive special access to industry programs and senior industry delegates at the Whistler Filmmaker Forum.

Film submission guidelines and forms are available at www.whistlerfilmfestival.com

The 2007 Whistler Film Festival presented a four-day program of 92 films: 37 features and mid-lengths, including four world premieres, two Canadian premieres, and twenty British Columbia premieres, as well as 55 short films, and awarded more than $42,000 in prizes and commissions. The Festival attracted a record number of 684 delegates to the Filmmaker Forum, and over 7,000 attendees to festival, an increase of 15% over 2006.

The Whistler Film Festival Society (WFFS) is a charitable, not for profit cultural and educational organization committed to promoting, developing and celebrating a strong film industry in Western Canada, and to showcasing the best films from Canada and around the world. WFFS produces one of Canada's leading film festivals, and plays a leadership role in offering professional development programs and opportunities for filmmakers. WFFS offers two main programs for the international community to discover Canadian filmmakers and do business with the Canadian film industry: the Whistler Film Festival presented by American Express (December 4-7, 2008), and the Whistler Filmmaker Forum, Western Canada's premier industry event (December 3-6, 2008).
